Opened just last year, the Roig Arena is a striking new example of contemporary architecture.
You'll find our monthly marvel for May just a short walk from the City of Arts and Sciences. It is often spotted by visitors exploring this modern part of the city and although it is not officially part of the famous cultural complex, its bold design and impressive scale make it a natural addition to any architecture-focused visit. Together, the two sites showcase different generations of Valencia's ambition to create landmark buildings that shape the city's skyline.
The arena has been designed as a multi-purpose venue, bringing together sport, music, gastronomy and entertainment within a single contemporary structure. Its vast exterior, sweeping lines and modern materials create a distinctive presence in the Quatre Carreres district. One of its most striking features is the ceramic façade, formed from thousands of fins or louvres arranged like scales across the curved structure, giving the building a unique texture that changes with the light throughout the day.
Above the main entrance sits 'The Eye', a giant multimedia screen that has quickly become one of the arena's most recognisable features. Combined with the flowing façade, it gives the building a futuristic appearance that stands out even among Valencia's many modern landmarks.
Although many visitors arrive for a basketball game, concert or special event, the building itself is worth seeing. The scale of the project is impressive, with capacity for up to 20,000 people, yet the design remains elegant and modern rather than overwhelming. Spacious terraces, public areas and technology integrated throughout the venue reinforce Valencia's reputation as a city that embraces innovation alongside tradition.
If you are already visiting the City of Arts and Sciences, it is well worth taking a short detour to see Roig Arena. It offers a different perspective on modern Valencian architecture and a glimpse of the city's next chapter.
TIP! Visit in the late afternoon and stay until after sunset to see how the ceramic façade changes in the light and to experience 'The Eye' illuminated after dark.
How to get there
The arena is located on Calle Bombero Ramón Duart and can be reached with buses L7, L13, L14, L35 and L99 or by tram line 10, at the Quatre Carreres stop.
