The smell of gunpowder drifts in the air, as thousands of visitors arrive to experience the thunderous Fallas festival in Valencia, an annual celebration, recognised worldwide for its giant artworks, fireworks, crackers and unique traditions.
The excitement will climax next week on the night of 19 March, with the flaming Cremà – when monuments are set ablaze across the city.
Las Fallas 2026 takes place from 15–19 March, although Valencia has been building up to the celebrations since the beginning of the month with daily mascletà firecracker displays. During the main festival days the city is transformed by hundreds of giant monuments, street parties, fireworks and traditional events leading up to the spectacular finale on 19 March.
Across Valencia you’ll find hundreds of enormous monumentos falleros towering above squares and street corners. These colourful sculptures – often satirical and packed with humour – transform the city into an open-air gallery during the festival.
Walking through the historic centre during Las Fallas 2026, it’s almost impossible to go more than a few minutes without discovering another gigantic creation rising several storeys high.
The monuments only remain standing for a few short days. On the night of 19 March, crowds gather across the city for the emotional and spectacular finale, La Cremà, when each sculpture is burned in huge bonfires that light up the Valencian night sky.
Another highlight of the festival is the famous daily mascletà, one of the loudest and most thrilling traditions of Fallas. Every afternoon crowds gather in Plaza del Ayuntamiento as hundreds of firecrackers are detonated in a precisely choreographed sequence.
The explosions build rhythmically into a powerful finale that shakes the surrounding buildings, sending clouds of smoke into the sky and cheers through the packed square.
