Nestled in the charming heart of Valencia’s historic centre for 7 centuries, San Agustín Church is our hidden Gothic monthly marvel.
Located in Plaza de San Agustín, every curious traveller should discover this graceful building, which stands as one of the city’s most evocative reminders of its medieval past.
The story of San Agustín begins in 1307, when an Augustinian convent was founded here. For centuries the complex was one of the largest religious sites in Valencia, attracting pilgrims and locals alike. Though the convent itself has long vanished, the church remains — a testimony to the city’s layered history.
What you see today is largely the result of a sensitive 1945 restoration by architect Javier Goerlich Lleó, who rebuilt the building after it was heavily damaged in the Spanish Civil War in 1936, and added the striking tower that greets visitors from Guillem de Castro Street.
Step inside and you’ll immediately feel the serene lightness that defines this sacred space. The church is built on a single nave, flanked by side chapels and a choir at the rear, but what truly captivates are the five tall pointed windows in the presbytery. These lance-shaped openings flood the interior with soft, warm light that seems to lift the spirits.
History buffs will appreciate architectural details that reflect the building’s evolution through time — from medieval beginnings to 20th-century renewal. Among its treasures is the Byzantine-style icon Mare de Déu de Gracia - or Our Lady of Grace - a moving highlight of the church’s artistic heritage.
Whether you’re seeking spiritual space, architectural beauty, or a peaceful pause on your Valencia itinerary, San Agustín Church offers a quiet but unforgettable stop in this vibrant city.
