In the first of a new series of monthly Valencia marvels, our choice for March is the eye-catching Hemisferic building, in the City of Arts and Sciences.
Made to resemble a human eye, the Hemisferic building is surrounded by a lake and houses a 3D cinema with a 9,000 plus square foot (900 square metres) concave screen. This spectacular structure is a must-visit for lovers of both movies and modern architecture.
In the 300-person theatre you can lose yourself in a range of movies including travel to forgotten cities, space travel and more. The Hemisferic even offers an astronomy course, which teaches star, galaxy and black hole recognition.
Designed by renowned architect, Santiago Calatrava, the roof is made of glass and steel and opens like an eyelid, revealing the theatre and event space inside. This moving structure adds to the "eye" effect and enhances natural lighting. Its perimeter zone offers a breath-taking location for corporate events.
It was inaugurated in 1998 and was the first building in the City of Arts and Sciences to open its doors to the public.
