Valencia's beaches receive Blue Flag award

Prestigious Blue Flags will fly proudly over Valencia's beaches, this summer, in recognition of an award made for meeting important international quality standards.

The Blue Flag is the highest honour given by the Foundation for Environmental Education, an international organisation recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and based in Denmark.

The foundation announced, last week, that it has awarded new Blue Flags to the city's beaches at El Cabañal and Malvarrosa, for achieving environmental and educational criteria, as well as meeting important safety standards for water quality, services and information.

Beaches just to the south of the city in Pinedo, L'Arbe del Gos, El Saler, Garrofera, La Devesa and Recatí continue to hold the award, bringing the total number of Blue Flag beaches in and around the city to eight.

The city council also announced, last week, that they have started installing more walkways across the sand on beaches to improve access, as well as more facilities such as showers and foot-rinsers, which they say will make the beaches even better for everyone to enjoy.
